COMMUNITIES TACKLE GARBAGE HOUSE PROBLEM

-March 5, 2010

It's a problem that more and more communities across the state are having to tackle.

We're talking about garbage and clutter houses.

On Wednesday, the city hosted its first housing resource seminar. Officials from as far away as Brainerd and Duluth attended the training to learn more about the problem and hear some ideas to put to use in their own communities.

Coon Rapids Housing Inspector Leya Drabczak says, "I allow myself when I'm on a job to feel two things: compassion and fear. That's it. I don't have to feel sorry for them, they don't need my pity, they need me to help them and I have to be able to respond if I'm fearing for my safety."

In addition to code enforcement officials, representatives with the Coon Rapids police and fire departments talked about working with vulnerable adults and the mentally ill along with safety issues.
