BNSF RAILROAD WORKER KILLED BY NORTHSTAR TRAIN

-September 7, 2010

A veteran railroad worker talking on his cell phone was struck and killed this week after walking into the path of a Northstar Commuter Rail train.

The accident happened just before seven Wednesday morning on the double railroad tracks just east of Egret Boulevard. Authorities say 53-year old Andrew Weaver had just finished working on the westbound tracks with a three-car test train when the accident happened.

Lt. Paul Sommer of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office says, "As he's crossing the westbound tracks approaching the vehicle that's there to pick him up, talking on his cell phone, an eastbound Northstar commuter rail traveling approximately 80 mph struck him as he was attempting to cross the tracks."

Weaver, a 31 year employee of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, died at the scene. Busses were brought in to transport Northstar passengers to downtown Minneapolis.
