Port Riverwalk Winter Construction Update

Port Riverwalk

Several roads have been removed in the area of Avocet Street near Coon Rapids Boulevard, as part of redevelopment in this area known as “Port Riverwalk.” Local access is currently affected by construction for this project. The frontage road on the south side of Coon Rapids Boulevard has been removed and several local streets in the area are being realigned. This construction began in late summer of 2019 and will continue through 2020. Grading and infrastructure work is on hold for the winter and access to existing neighborhoods is provided through a temporary asphalt roadway connecting Avocet Street, Zilla Street and East River Road.

Coon Rapids-based Centra Homes is developing 136 one-level and two-level detached townhomes along Coon Rapids Boulevard generally between Egret Boulevard and Avocet Street. A site plan and preliminary plat for this development were approved by the City Council in the spring of 2019. It is expected to take about three years to complete the entire development. Model homes are expected to be completed by the summer of 2020. Interested homebuyers can sign up for an interest list on the Centra Homes website.

The City is also working with Anoka County on improvements to Coon Rapids Boulevard in this area. The work will include replacement of asphalt pavement, curb and gutter work, access modifications, and a revised lane configuration. It will also include new pedestrian-scale lighting and landscaping along the corridor, along with a sidewalk on the north side of Coon Rapids Boulevard and a trail on the south side of the boulevard. Traffic signals at Avocet Street and Egret Boulevard will also be replaced as part of the project. Construction is expected to take place in 2020. The City is also working to secure state and federal funding for a future pedestrian bridge to help connect the north and south sides of Coon Rapids Boulevard.

Anoka County is taking a survey to gather public opinion about a possible pedestrian bridge. You can take the survey online.
