Everything about the Boulevard Bar & Grille represents family. The business is owned by two families who partner together to run the operation, and the employees make a tight-knit team that at times will even celebrate holidays with each other’s families. Located on Coon Rapids Boulevard just a few blocks from Mercy Hospital and Anoka-Ramsey Community College, the Boulevard Bar & Grille will often join in on the celebration of students passing a stressful test or a family welcoming a new baby into the world. Regular customers, servers and managers all leave the Boulevard Bar & Grille treated like family.
Terry Barstow was a young girl when she fell in love with the restaurant industry as she often helped her mom clean up at the end of a long shift in a diner. “I love people. I love making them feel welcome and remembering their names and stories,” Barstow says. Many years later, Barstow followed her mom’s footsteps and worked in a restaurant as a server. Amanda Knaeble worked with Barstow at another local restaurant, and noticed her natural gift with hospitality. Knaeble approached Barstow with an idea to open a new restaurant together.
The duo teamed up and Boulevard Bar & Grille opened its doors to the Coon Rapids community about five years ago. “Opening a restaurant was a huge learning experience,” says Barstow. “Thank goodness for Amanda who knows how it all comes together. I have never been involved with things like writing a menu, picking out light fixtures, deciding what distributors we would work with and what would be on tap.”
To keep up with a growing business, it takes teamwork. Both Barstow and Knaeble fell into specific roles depending on their strengths and their husbands have supported them by helping with remodeling, social media marketing and other various tasks as needed. Barstow and Knaeble both have relatives that work for them as managers, bartenders, servers and dishwashers. Even the staff that is not directly related feels like family. Barstow says proudly, “They often handle a problem before it even gets to me.”
People tend to enjoy the atmosphere at the Boulevard Bar & Grille where there is always something going on or a reason to visit; such as made-from-scratch breakfast on the weekends, karaoke on Saturday nights, live music, bingo or the delicious ½ lb. burgers (that are never frozen). Knaeble and Barstow invite the Coon Rapids community to become part of the “grille family” if they’ve never visited before.
