In addition, property insurers may not cover work done without proper permits and inspections. If a home or building is listed for sale, a potential buyer may examine City records to ensure proper permits and inspections were obtained.
Permits are not required for the following projects: replacing cabinets in a kitchen or elsewhere, installing carpet or other floor coverings, installing wallpaper or paneling on finished surfaces, redecorating without structural changes and simple landscaping projects.
Homeowners may apply for a permit if they plan to do the work themselves on the structure they presently reside in. If you are hiring a contractor, the contractor is required to have a State Building Contractors license and pull all required permits. The Homeowner or Contractor completing the work is responsible for obtaining all required permits. No. The contractor must take out a building permit. When the contractor signs the permit, they are agreeing to do the work according to code. If you sign for the permit, you are liable for correcting the contractor's work if it should fall short of City adopted code standards. Before your project begins, insist on seeing the permit. During the course of your project, monitor your contractor’s inspection records. This protects homeowners from being responsible for code violations and ensures project completion.

Yes. The placement and use of dumpsters, both soft and hard sided, on residential properties is limited to one month, except in associations with an active building permit. In such cases, the dumpster must be removed within six months of the date of the issuance of the building permit. Dumpsters are not allowed to be placed on city streets; they must be placed on private property.

The City of Coon Rapids does not use general tax dollars to fund the activities of CTN but instead generates departmental funding through cable user fees. These fees are listed on your monthly cable bill as a 5% franchise fee and a $2.23 Public, Education and Government (PEG) fee. These fees, combined with the revenue generated from our production service projects, provides the funding necessary to operate CTN.

Yes. The current pay is $11 per hour.
Minnesota Statute 204B.195 allows individuals to take time off from work, without penalty or loss of wages, to serve as Elections Judges on election day(s). A 20-day written notice requesting to be absent from work for this purpose must be submitted to the employer. The request must be accompanied by a certification from the City of Coon Rapids indicating the days and hours the employee will serve as an Election Judge.
The employer may reduce the salary of the employee by the amount received for working as an election judge for hours the employee would normally work. The Statute makes this decision optional for the employer.
The City of Coon Rapids prohibits the use of any type of grill (gas, electric, charcoal) from being used on the deck of any vertically stacked residential unit. This includes any structure containing two or more vertically stacked units.
City Code section 12-419 reads: In any structure containing two or more vertically stacked residential units, no person shall kindle, maintain, or cause any fire or open flame on any balcony above ground level, or on any ground level patio immediately adjacent to or within 15 feet of any unit.

Yes. The annual Arbor Day tree sale assists residents in acquiring a tree for their property at a nominal fee. Residents choose from a wide selection of bare root trees which can be pre-ordered through our Forestry Division. Arbor Day in Minnesota is the last Friday in April.

Full-time (career) firefighter vacancies are only available to Coon Rapids Paid-On-Call Firefighters. The City conducts external recruitment only for the Paid-On-Call Firefighter roster.
The Paid-On-Call roster recruitment generally occurs every two years. Any vacancy for a Paid-On-Call Firefighter is filled from this roster. Successful candidates will possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Appointed individuals must meet response time requirements. A Paid-On-Call Firefighter is required to maintain residency within the 10-minute response zone. The Coon Rapids’ response zone is based on a 10 minute drive time from each fire station. Paid-On-Call Firefighter candidates cannot also be an employee of the City of Coon Rapids or cannot be an active member of any other fire department. Successful candidates must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

City Code 12-306 states parking is prohibited on front and side yards except on improved surfaces. Parking in the rear yard is acceptable if the vehicle has current registration and is operable. Improved surface means a surface such as asphalt, concrete or pavers.
Signs are not permitted on trees, street signs or light and utility poles. One ground sign per lot is permitted, not larger than 6 square feet in area. Signs may not be located within the public right-of-way. All ground signs must be set back at least one foot from a public sidewalk or 18 feet from the curb if there is no sidewalk.
Coon Rapids has a winter parking ban in effect November 1st through April 1st. Vehicles cannot be parked on a public street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. between those dates. Parking is also prohibited on public streets anytime there is an accumulation of three or more inches of snow or until the street has been plowed from curb to curb.
An odd-even sprinkling ban is in effect from June 1st through August 31st. This means houses with an odd number address water on odd numbered days, and even numbered addressed water on even numbered days. If necessary during periods of drought, additional restrictions may be imposed to ensure sufficient water supply for firefighting and every day necessities.

The Streets Division (Public Works) is responsible for snow plowing, and street patching and sweeping. To report a problem, call the Public Works Department at 763-755-2880. If you prefer, you can report issues by using our Coon Rapids Report It system on this website.
The Bunker Hills compost site is located at 13285 Hanson Boulevard. It is open from April 1 to November 30, weather permitting.
Call the compost site at 763-767-7964 for hours and fees. Please DO NOT dispose of grass, leaves, branches or other debris in the street. This can clog drainage areas and contribute to contaminated stormwater runoff.
The Public Works Department coordinates with our independent lighting contractor. Report outages by calling 763-755-2880 and a work order is generated. You may also report street light outages online using the website Report It system.
Use the Coon Rapids Report It system. This allows you to describe the location of the pothole, submit a photo and email your request to our staff. You will then receive an email stating we received your report. Potholes are patched throughout the winter and spring. City staff rotate through various areas of town to get to all locations as quickly as possible.
Street sweeping occurs in the spring and summer. Residents can assist City crews by keeping their garbage/recycling cans out of the street, and place them behind the curb. This allows crews to clean streets thoroughly from curb-to-curb. Please do not keep basketball hoops, hockey goals or other materials in the streets or cul-de-sacs.
Reconstruction or mill and overlay work involves removing and replacing a section of a damaged curb, driveway aprons, sidewalks and repairing or replacing storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water main facilities. Curb stops which isolate a service line from the main line in the street should be located and "at grade" for emergency shutoffs. City Code prohibits the use of electric welders for thawing frozen water lines.

Every spring, City utility crews flush half of the fire hydrants in the city. If crews are working in your neighborhood, you may experience some water discoloration, but this does not affect the safety of the water. It’s best to avoid doing laundry until the discoloration has disappeared.
If you have no water check to see if the water valves are open at the water meter by turning them counter-clockwise. If you have done this and there still is no water, call Public Works at 763-755-2880.
If you have low water pressure first make sure both valves before and after the water meter are completely open. Next, check the outside faucet. If the water pressure is good, then the problem is inside your home. If you are unable to determine the cause, call Public Works at 763-755-2880.
